I can only note

that the past is beautiful

because

one never realises an emotion at the time.

It expands later,

and thus we don’t have

complete emotions about the present,

only about the past.

(Virginia Woolf)

The monumental bronze sculpture Novecento by the Italian artist Arnaldo Pomodoro, is intended to be a summary of the Italian history in the last century.

By alternating empty spaces and the solidity of the bronze, the artist’s aim is to illustrate the long history of the country, with its troubles and its success.

This artwork, which imitate obelisks shape, is link between past and future.

The location was chosen as a welcome to people incoming in Rome from the sea.

The following video is about the realization of the sculpture, from the first beginning to its setting.

Informations:

The sculpture “Novecento” is in Rome, in piazzale Pier Luigi Nervi, in the neighborhood EUR.

This area was built for the 1942’s Universal Exhibition. Due to the World War II, the neighborhood itself was never been accomplished.

The district itself is a masterpiece of the rationalistic architecture.
